Roxanne Shante’s Latest Lie Strikes A Nerve

by Malika S. Flowers on Nov.02, 2009, under KS EXCLUSIVE, KS NEWS

According Blackvoices.com, 80’s rapper Roxanne Shante recently revealed that she is living with breast cancer. While most women that are dealt such a blow are given unconditional support after such a heavy diagnosis, Roxanne Shante (real name Lolita Shante Gooden), is instead being questioned about her supposed condition.

An April 2009 article was published about Gooden in the New York Daily News, where she claimed that she forced her record label to fund her education, allowing her to receive her Ph.D. from Cornell University. The move was said to have cost the label $217,000.

After the article, Gooden was lauded as a hero that finally stuck it to the music industry, which is well known for cheating its artists. Not long after the article was published, the whole story was debunked when Slate.com discredited the whole thing as a hoax. The truth, as reported by Slate.com, is Gooden has no degree at all. Moreover, she is not licensed to practice any kind of psychology, nor is she authorized to treat any kind of patient.

Now, Roxanne took the liberty of telling Blackvoices.com about her supposed illness. The only problem this time, is that this story goes against common sense and medical practicality.

An excerpt from the aforementioned interview reads as follows:

In March, I noticed a lump in my left breast, rather small at the time and didn’t really know what I was feeling. So instead of going straight to the doctor’s office, I started asking friends their opinion and trying to go by their experiences. It was such a stupid move. Well, I figured I was just getting older. A hysterectomy in my early thirties led me to believe that I would be fine. Another stupid move.

I let months go by – five months to be exact. The weight loss of over 40 pounds made me feel like, “Damn, this diet is finally working.” But then I remembered I wasn’t on a diet. So on a bright, sunny day in August 2009, I walked into Doshi center for a mammogram. I put on the gown and stepped up to the machine. As soon as the technician took my breast in her hand, she asked me how long had I had the lump. “It’s huge,” she said. I made a joke, she giggled, but I was scared and angry that I had waited so long.

I was in denial. I even went so far as to ignore the letters sent by the lab that read: “Urgent!!! Please contact us.”

I had gotten a call from the doctor, “I just received your images at my office and they have been trying to reach you for weeks. As soon as you get back to New York, you come to my office. This is your life.”

I hung up, turned the phone off, walked out on the set and tried to pretend that the call never happen. But they did. And it showed on my face.”

Her account of her diagnosis of breast cancer is ripe with holes and implausible situations. To begin with, how often does one lose “over 40 pounds” before they conclude that there may be some sort of health issue? A quick web search of several reputable websites on the issue of breast cancer also showed that not one of them listed weight loss as a symptom of breast cancer.

Often, cancer patients do in fact lose weight. However, it typically has more to do with the cancer treatment, than the sickness itself. So if Shante did actually lose as much weight as she claims, it had absolutely nothing to do with breast cancer. Then, she supposedly decided to go in for a mammogram because of her unexplained weight loss. How many women run out for mammograms as soon as they realize that they’ve lost an unexplained and extreme amount of weight? Not many.

Next, Shante claimed that a “technician” that performed her mammogram felt for the lump and claimed that it was “huge.” For those that are unfamiliar with a breast exam, it is the doctor that actually touches the breast and feels for lumps. All the technician is trained to do is position the breast on the x-ray machine.

If a technician did actually feel a lump, for her to actually say that to a patient goes completely against the standards of bedside manner. Typically, even if a medical professional does sense that there may be trouble, they certainly wouldn’t let a patient know that they are worried about a lump.

Frankly, a technician isn’t even trained to diagnose or feel for a lump. The technician has absolutely nothing to do with the diagnosis of breast cancer. Once the mammogram is done the radiologist is the one that reads the x-ray results.

The final hole in her story lies in how she claims to have received the news about her diagnosis. Gooden alleges that letters were sent to her home reading “Urgent!!! Please contact us.” It should be noted that when a patient needs to be given information on an issue as important as a breast cancer diagnosis, by law, they are only allowed to give such information in person.

Because the information is so personal and so time sensitive, the chances of her receiving a notice of an abnormal mammogram is slim to none. If she really needed to go to the doctor to speak immediately, they would call her on the telephone first, instead of sending letters and then attempting to call her. According to her account, letters had been sent for weeks to her home before the doctor even reached out to her by telephone.

Nothing can be more deplorable than lying about something as serious as breast cancer. Nearly 41,000 women die annually from the disease, tearing many lives and families apart. I highly doubt that any of those women and their families would take lightly some attention seeking has-been rapper lying about it to get her name in the papers and in blogs.

Now that Roxanne Shante’s latest lie has been debunked, maybe she’ll slink back into the gutter she came from and stay there.

disgusting and deplorable behavior from a woman who seems to need a psychologist of her own instead of lying about being one.

I cannot imagine a person lying about something as significant as breast cancer. I have watched my favorite cousin battle with breast cancer last year and when I say battle i mean just that. Breast cancer is so ravaging toward the body that there is no words i could explain as I sat by helplessly and saw her loose all her hair and weight via chemotherapy. If a person needs attention this is not the proper format. I am so livid right now just to here about this might be a lie also. It is like the boy who cried wolf all the time. I also lost two aunts within the same day from breast cancer so this is an article I do not take lightly.
