Who Repped B.M.F. The Best?

by KS STAFF on Aug.11, 2010, under THE EARLY EFFECT

bigmeechWhether you’re aware of the brewing riff between Def Jam artists Young Jeezy and Rick Ross or not is of no consequence. What matters at this point is who came the hardest on the track. With Bun B’s most recent offering, our minds got to wandering… so we had to ask.

Is it Rozay?

Be it a mixtape release or not, he put it out there to begin with. One could argue it made waves due to its title, but bottom line, the shit sounds good. Dude may be a former corrections officer who built his career off another ni**a’s life, but he makes good music. Period.

Did Jeezy flip it?

A known affiliate with founding B.M.F. members, the Hawkinsville native made a home in Atlanta and appears to be very much the little brother to Big Meech and his brother Terry. The interesting thing about Jeezy’s most recent outburst, is it isn’t the first time he attempted to steal Ross’ thunder. (continue reading…)

What Is Life Without Oscar Grant?

by KS STAFF on Jul.12, 2010, under KS EXCLUSIVE, THE EARLY EFFECT

justice-for-oscar-grantJuly 8, 2010 will go down as a historic day. Catastrophic and historic just the same.

On one hand, you had basketball’s most talked about player finally decide where he wants to play next season. On the other there was Oscar Grant – a 22 year old Black man from Oakland that died senselessly at the hands of Johannes Mehserle - a 27 year old officer.

The decision in the O.G. case represented a lot of things. Above all, it was a chance for the justice system to finally get it right on the big stage, as people from coast to coast weighed in.

With an example like Rodney King (who survived his attackers) before him, it seemed simple. With all the camera angles and interpretations we watched over a year and a half ago, it seemed… easy. But it wasn’t. The verdict proved to be yet another reminder that we still live in a corrupt system which empowers irresponsible people. (continue reading…)

The Early Effect: What Did Brown Do For You?

by PAPERBOI PIMPEN on Jun.28, 2010, under THE EARLY EFFECT, VID E OZE

brownI haven’t had the opportunity to watch the BET Awards yet, but I hear it was spectacular – by BET standards…

I mean, it couldn’t have gotten much worse. Last year’s debacle is still stitched in my memory and very much part of the reason why I wasn’t exactly thrilled about thumbing through the DVR to find it and offer my professional opinion today.

What I did do though, at my wife’s request, is watch Chris Brown’s performance. I’m sure I was one of the umpteen million people who thought he should have been given an opportunity to strut his respective stuff in honor of the man who obviously helped shape him  as an artist – last year.

He, however, was denied and the show was a definitive, historical disaster.

by PAPERBOI PIMPEN on Jun.22, 2010, under SLAP, THE EARLY EFFECT

1270644755-dr-dre-and-jay-z-in-the-studio-450x299Within the first bar of “Under Pressure,” Dr. Dre addresses the cynicism that has surrounded this project for the past… 9 years?

The long awaited Detox trick/ maybe I don’t wanna stop/ maybe I don’t wanna quit…

And with that he effectively announced his return to the world of album sales. Because that’s what he’s going to get.

Even during a recession where record companies have fallen off as fast as Roy Jones Jr.’s legacy, Detox is going to rise to the occasion and show you how young Lil Wayne’s money is… More importantly, Detox is going to work to repair an industry suffocating from listless talent and fast music, formulated for the now opposed to forever.

Foe All The Marbles…

by KS STAFF on Jun.17, 2010, under GAME, THE EARLY EFFECT

abmdvt2It’s proving you’re the best in your conference, no matter how tall, fast or strong the opposition, all in an effort to get to this point.

It’s double digit wins in the first game of the series… fending for attention against the LBJ sweepstakes. It’s fighting the ghosts of 2008 past.

It’s record setting nights on O and D, 8 3s, double digit blocks and an unforeseeable victory in Tinseltown. It’s Disappointed superstars, foul laden games by butterfly stricken refs.

It’s moving on to the next one.

It’s proving all the doubters wrong time and time again. It’s “adjustments” no matter which way you slice it… Go harder, stronger and do what you do, but it’s ensuring your main guy gets off.
