WCW | Dr. Dre | “Puffin’ On Blunts And Drankin’ Tanqueray”

by KS STAFF on Dec.02, 2009, under VID E OZE, WCW

death row gang

Fresh for West Coast Wednesdays!

This video comes courtesy of the new Death Row 3CD/DVD box set WideAwake Entertainment has been promoting for the past few months. Good to see this footage, but it would be better to know the most powerful West Coast label ever, was still intact.

In any scenario, it’s refreshing to know something like this is possible. The Lady of Rage sets it off. Daz takes the baton and Kurupt absolutely MURDERS it!

New SLAP | Snoop Dogg | ‘Protocol’ x Malice… Album Cover

by KS STAFF on Oct.14, 2009, under SLAP, WCW

This is the beauty (or not) of the entity known as Snoop Dogg. One minute he’s doing a candy ass autotune track with Dream and the next, he reminds you of the lean, indo blown, forty OZ drinking youngster that Dre introduced you to in 1991. For what it’s worth, “Protocol” is  a reminder of what he can do when he applies himself…

There are whispers however, that Calvin is reciting verses his rap friends have been providing him with.  In either scenario, the delivery is still incomparable and it’s not like he hasn’t arrived as a point in his career where he’s earned that right.

Drake Tries To Clean Up 2pac Diss

by PAPERBOI PIMPEN on Oct.14, 2009, under KS NEWS, WCW

76c1ea81dadrake2.jpgTo his credit, Drake prefaces what many are calling a sneak diss by saying, “Don’t take this the wrong way but uh…” on the song “Fear.” Dude is smart enough to know that a cavalry of West Coast enthusiasts and hip hop fans in general would come after him for not respecting the career and legacy of one of the greatest to do it.

The line continues, “I never cried when ‘Pac died/but I probably will when Hov does/ and if my tears hold value, then I would drop one for every single thing he showed us/ And I’ll probably be standing in a puddle…”

Actually, if you take everything into account, it’s a direct diss. He blames his ignorance on his age and not knowing, but that’s a poor excuse. If he was 9 when 2pac died, which he says he was, he was old enough to process the fact that Pac and Jay Z weren’t exactly bowling partners.

“A lot of people also sort of don’t understand the meaning of that line,” Drake said. “It’s not necessarily that I don’t love West Coast hip-hop or that I don’t love ‘Pac now that I’m 22, but that line was just said to show how new I am to hip-hop. And like I said, I was 9 when that happened, so it didn’t really affect me.”

Mentioning both names in the same bar and having the gall to suggest the idea of ’shedding a tear’ for either man, is reason enough to suspect he’s heard some Pac along the way. Meanwhile, he moves to worship a guy Pac clearly didn’t like. There’s no reason to compare his allegiance, other than to take a potshot at someone who is no longer with us.

These muthaf*ckas need to learn some manners.

Dr. Dre Wants More From Jay Z

by PAPERBOI PIMPEN on Oct.14, 2009, under KS NEWS, WCW

DrDre-DetoxStudy long, you study wrong… I know, I know. I may sound crazy to all of you devout Roc fans, but the truth is, I don’t really give a fuck. My issue with Dr. Dre’s “heavily anticipated-damn near never gonna come out” album Detox is, he seems to be going away from what made it a classic series in the first place.

The original Chronic was chock full of artists you’d never heard of, but by the time you finished listening to it, you were eagerly anticipating their albums too. RBX, The Lady of Rage, Dogg Pound, etc. it was perhaps the most explosive musical platform we’d ever absorbed… and it was all West Coast.

Now, granted, The Lady of Rage is from VA and Kurupt claimed Philly too, but they bought in. The Chronic is and will always be considered, a WEST COAST CLASSIC. Then, nine years later they did it all over again with 2001.

I suppose when you make the decision to DETOX, you do away with all that has made you what you are and I’m just not ready to see the product that Dr. Dre (and Death Row) built, dissipate into some commercialized, ‘we are the world’ rap collaboration.

This all stems from a brief interview Dre did with MTV where he asked the Brooklyn native to “come holla.” On paper it’s a good look I guess. Dre is the undisputed best at what he does and many consider Jay Z rap’s leading man. And that’s where it should stay. He’s already writing on the project. What true West Coast die hard wants to hear him on a Chronic record?

On top of that, Nas and R. Kelly are rumored to appear on the project. AND Lil Wayne, Drake and T.I. are supposed ghost writers.

Maybe I’m hating, but after all this time, I don’t wanna hear all that shit.
