Doin’ Work: Tha Hip Hop Doc (LA 2 Chi)
by KS STAFF on Mar.12, 2010, under WORK
Got a call from Tha Hip Hop Doc a couple days ago and while we go back a couple few years, it was good to reconnect and put something new down.
You may or may not know it, but Dr. Rani Whitfield is one of the most thorough Family Physicians in the country… AND he’s a Hip Hop junkie!!
Kinda makes you want to move to Louisiana and get some health care don’t it? At any rate, this flyer was inspired by his comic book series, “My Life Is In Your Hands.”
He’ll be speaking in Chicago next week to promote the series and more importantly, the reality of getting hip hop healthy!!
New SLAP | Twista | “Hustla” (Video)
by KS STAFF on Dec.18, 2009, under VID E OZE
For every broke cat that claims he can’t ‘get his’ due to the recession, there’s a hustla that has no idea what economic hardship is.
It’s just the way of the world when you put your feet to the concrete and Twista provides some visual assistance here on “Hustla” for the money making impaired.
Presumably based in the rough and tumble streets of Chicago, Twista reminds the viewer/listener where he came from with bars like:
Used to be able to get the elbow for the six/ now muthafuckas want 8…
I remember we used to break a bitch/ now that it’s a recession we gotta wait for the lick…
for the kush they want six for the ounce/ and they want 28 for the brick…
Twista’s Category F5 is in stores now.
R. Kelly Takes The Stage To Deliver Motivational Speech?
by PAPERBOI PIMPEN on Oct.01, 2009, under VID E OZE
First there was the “N” word and now this… Last night during the Midwest Music Network multi-platinum producer R. Kelly took the stage, but he did so outside of his traditional element. Instead, he used his time to discuss the notion of burying the word “hate.”
He encouraged the Chitown audience to let go of the negativity and offered, “The depth of your struggle will determine the height of your success.”
A moving spill from a man who readily admits he doesn’t read. In fact, Kelly discloses how he his cousins and others teased him when he was younger because he was in fact illiterate. Then he just went on to become one of the most talented writers of all time.
Go figure. He may be one tortured soul, but you can’t knock his desire to succeed. Can one of the most hated men in America effectively kill the “H” word?
New SLAP | R. Kelly feat. Keri Hilson | “Number One”
by KS STAFF on Aug.18, 2009, under VID E OZE
New music from “R. Keri” here. Pretty dope concept, in that the two R&B sensations appear to record the thing in their respective cities – Chicago (Kellz) and Atlanta (Miss Keri Babay!)… or is that because Kellz can’t travel? In any scenario, it’s a nice it’s hot as a firecracker. But why wouldn’t it be?
Even if Keri Hilson doesn’t know the difference between Elvis and Michael Jackson, she knows how to perform and doing so with arguably the most talented rhythm & blues cat in the industry will bring even more out of you.
KS Exclusive | Twista Eating Just Fine In Chitown
by PAPERBOI PIMPEN on Aug.13, 2009, under KS EXCLUSIVE, SHYNE
HOME OF THE BRAVE
It’s a good two months prior to the release for his eighth solo album, Category F5 and Carl “Twista” Mitchell is doing what he does best: making music. He is not, however, in some dolled up studio all the way West in Hollywood. Nor is he in one of the million music factory’s of New York, or even Atlanta. He’s at the Crib – literally.
Truth be told, Twista is one of two people that can operate under such conditions. The other happens to be one of music’s most genius talents, despite his controversial ties to underage women. Regardless, either of them has done much to blaze a trail for their successors and put the city of Chicago on the map in the process.
“Me and R. Kelly can do what we do from the Crib (Chicago),” Twista allows from the basement of his Chicago home. “We’re homebodies. We like to stay at home.”
With good reason, Twista can do him from his nest simply because the city of Chicago has accepted and even owned his success. Whether they’ve followed him from the past or currently stand at attention for his Twitter updates, he has a base that looks for him and to him, when others from the same streets don’t have the same luxury.
